CAN MINTS HELP IMPROVE EXERCISE PERFORMANCE?

I’ve been attending ‘Clubbercise’ classes over the last few months… to get active and have a complete break at the end of long days spent at the desk or working on the factory floor.

Hot on the heels of exercise trends like Zumba and Pilates, Clubbercise comprises fun dance fitness routines using glow sticks to club anthems taught in a darkened room with disco lights.

Yes you read that right – basically it’s clubbing but for fitness, right down to the glow sticks and 90’s beats! It’s great fun and you tend to forget you are exercising, which makes it easy to push yourself to turn up in the first place!

Given my recent enthusiasm for exercising, I was interested to read about the potential benefits of consuming peppermint to improve exercise performance.

One article in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition mentioned a study which reported that participants who ingested peppermint while active could exercise for longer. The results showed improved blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory functionality.

The researchers think the effects are most likely due to the increase in ventilation and oxygen provided to the brain, along with a decreased blood lactate level, and more relaxed muscles.

Apparently Mint is a natural stimulant and the smell alone can be enough to show improvements in areas of cardiovascular endurance and strength, and the scent of mint helps to increase energy and decrease exhaustion.

So I think I’ll conduct my own little experiment, eating a delicious Delvaux mint before my next workout! It would be good to see if the taste and aroma will help me complete the class without stopping to mop my brow 🙂

It may be a stretch to suppose that eating Mints will necessarily have the same impact as ingesting peppermint oil but even if the effect is placebo by nature it got me thinking about how any business, organisation or association associated with providing exercise, training and other activities might choose to use Mints as their confectionery of choice (from our range of Chocolates, Mints and Boiled Sweets, personalised with branding, promotional messaging or words of encouragement, special offers etc).

Next time I go to my Clubbercise I’ll be suggesting they have some Mints printed up to encourage others to join us… because there’s nothing like a packed ‘dance floor’ for getting the heart racing!
