WHY DO HOTELS PUT CHOCOLATES ON THE PILLOW?
I have often wondered how the tradition of placing a chocolate, mint or sweet on a hotel pillow first started.
Recently I stumbled across a magazine article explaining how it all began and apparently we can thank Cary Grant for this sweet trend.
So… did Cary Grant start the fashion for chocolates on a pillow?
The story goes… in the early 1950s Hollywood heartthrob Cary Grant was staying in the penthouse at the luxurious Mayfair Hotel in downtown St. Louis and hosting a female visitor he wanted to impress.
Rumour has it that the lady arrived ahead of Grant, to discover he had laid out a trail of chocolates for her, running from the sitting room into the bedroom and onto a pillow where he had left a welcoming letter.
The Mayfair’s manager heard about Cary Grant’s seduction technique and was impressed with the thoughtful, luxurious detail of a chocolate on the pillow.
So the manager decided that all his guests should be greeted with a pleasant surprise that would make them feel appreciated and he started to offer a chocolate on the pillows in all of his rooms.
This gesture has since been adopted by thousands of hotels, cruise ships and even sleeper trains and still continues today… not just in the ‘Cary Grant Suite’ at the Mayfair Hotel (now renamed the ‘Magnolia Hotel St. Louis’) but all over the world!
