WHY GIVE A CHOCOLATE, MINT OR SWEET TO YOUR CUSTOMERS?
I’ve just been reading fascinating research proving that when it comes to customer service, a small personalised chocolate, mint or sweet can have a surprisingly big impact and can lead to a ‘win win’ situation for all!
It’s clear that giving a complimentary gift after a meal or with a product or service can reap big rewards and there is now research explaining the psychology behind it.
A recent study tested what happens when a customer is given a mint with a restaurant bill and how it can greatly effect the customer’s perception of the service and the amount of tip they give… it turns out tips can be much higher when a customer is given a mint.
The research suggests that giving a mint with a bill can increase tips by around 3% and giving 2 mints can increase tips by around 14%.
But… give one mint with the bill and then return to offer some mints with the comment “I thought you might like some more mints…” and tips can increase by up to 21% compared to giving no mints.
So it seems tips can be increase by giving a chocolate, mint or sweet with the bill… and the more you give (returning a second time to offer extras) the bigger the tip!
The simple, friendly act of thanking a customer with a delicious, refreshing gift creates a positive impression and impact on the customer’s mood.
It’s clear from the study that a personal touch coupled with a gift has a very positive impact on a customer’s perception of your business.
Being generous can have long-term rewards. It makes the customer think they have made the right choice, it makes them feel cared for and it builds their loyalty and recommendation.
Add to this sense of goodwill positive reinforcement of your business name, logo, website, social media and/or special offers by using personalisation on the wrapper of your chocolates, mints and sweets and you have a winning formula!
