Fighting Back After COVID-19 Lockdown… Part II


It has been a very challenging time for everyone working in the Hospitality Sector (as we discussed in our first blog in this series on “Winning Hospitality”) but recently the Customer Service team here at Delvaux and I have been super impressed by the different ways our hospitality customers have been adapting and changing their business models to win bookings and deliver positive customer experiences in this ‘new normal’.


Some restaurants have even changed their model entirely to meet the needs of their customers and boost sales, such as converting their kitchens into “virtual restaurants” or “ghost kitchens” and using Uber Eats, Deliveroo etc to deliver.

Other restaurants, cafes and even pubs have started running online cookery classes and wine tasting events, and others have turned some of their space into grocery stores and post offices and others have created special ‘home delivery kits’ to supplement lost revenue.

Clearly outdoor space is ‘king’ and the weather has been helping with a relatively hot and dry Summer.

Our customers with outdoor space have been utilising it to reduce contact inside both for socially distanced queuing and for socially distanced consuming! They’ve also been busy spacing out tables and fitting dividers, removing self-service buffet stations and installing thermal monitoring.


Across all types of business we’ve seen a big increase in ‘digitisation’ of the dining and hospitality experience and no doubt that will continue.

It was always coming, but COVID-19 has sped up digitisation massively, forcing businesses to launch apps and contactless ordering and to upgrade their websites and social media.

Many of our customers have now introduced new apps and improved website booking options to enable their guests to book in advance whenever possible, to help manage capacity, to cut down on queuing and to enable the easy collection of contact details incase of a Corona Virus outbreak.

We even know of golf clubs that have extended their golf score card apps to offer their members digital payments and the option to order via the apps too… and restaurant and pub menus are now being reprinted to include QR codes that customers can scan on their mobiles to order.

These innovations can have unexpected and very positive consequences… believe it or not… we even know of some parents who sent their son a picture of themselves in a restaurant enjoying an evening out… the son spotted a QR code on the bill he could just see on the table in the picture… he discovered he could scan it himself… so he paid their bill as a surprise!


So given all this new thinking it’s no surprise that our customers across the hospitality sector (and beyond) are getting super creative in how they use their branded Sweets & Chocolates from Delvaux, with printed messaging on the front and back of the wrappers.

You can do the same too, maximising all the benefits of personalised confectionery to grow your business as well, such as:

> letting your customers know that you are open for business again;

> explaining the health and safety procedures you have implemented… reassuring people they can leave their homes to enjoy a meal or drink out, or a ‘staycation’ with their family, or go on an overnight business trip;

> giving your customers enticements to return… to book or buy, such as special discounts and special offers;

> promoting your participation in the promotional schemes;

> driving traffic to your website and/or social media;

> building loyalty, thanking and gifting your customers for their custom and encouraging them to return soon;

> encouraging word of mouth recommendation!
