For those who are perhaps less familiar with Eid and Ramadan, we hope the following information, largely from Wikipedia, is helpful.

Eid Mubarak

Eid Mubarak is an Arabic term that means “Blessed Feast/festival”. The term is used by Arab Muslims, as well as Muslims all over the world.

Internationally Muslims use it as a greeting for use on the festivals of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. Eid means “Feast”, and Mubarak (derived from the Semitic root B-R-K) means “Blessed”.

(But throughout the Muslim world there are apparently numerous greetings for Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr, such as “May you be well with every passing year”, “May your holiday be happy”, “May your festival be blessed”, “”.)

In the social sense, people usually celebrate Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan and Eid-al-Adha in the month of Dhul Hijjah (the 12th and final Islamic month).

Eid al-Fitr

The holiday of Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the next lunar month, is declared after a crescent new moon has been sighted or after completion of thirty days of fasting if no sighting of the moon is possible.

Eid celebrates the return to a more natural disposition (fitra) of eating and drinking. In the UK this year Eid al-Fitr will begin on Saturday 23 May and end in the evening of Sunday 24 May.

Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, also called the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr), and is considered the holier of the two.

In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and lasts for four days. In the UK this year Eid al-Adha will begin on Thursday 30 July and end in the evening of Monday 3 August.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection and community.

The annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.

Fasting from sunrise to sunset is fard (obligatory) for all adult Muslims who are not acutely or chronically ill, travelling, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating.
